Body mass index (BMI)
What is BMI
BMI stands for body mass index. It was formerly called the Quetelet index. BMI utilizes a person's weight and height to measure body fat and relative obesity. BMI is used to check the nutritional status of a person. BMI calculation is also beneficial for children and adolescents. It can help in tracking the expected growth of children and adolescents. In the case of children and adolescents, it is calculated the same as adults and then compared with the z-index.
BMI Calculation
To calculate BMI, divide a person's body weight in kg by the square of a person's height in meters (kg/m^2).
BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m) ^ 2)
For example, a person with a height of 175 cm and a weight of 72 kg will have a BMI of 23.5.
Significance of BMI
Because of ease in calculation, BMI is most commonly used to correlate a person's body weight to disease. The healthy BMI range is 18.5 - 24.9. High BMI can be an indication of some health problems. Some common health problems related to overweight and obesity include premature death, cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, some cancers, and diabetes. Use BMI to track potential health risks and incorporate it with a healthy diet and regular physical exercises. BMI can help you define your fitness and health goals to achieve a fit and healthy life.
