Nutrition Basics
Nutrients are organic substances essential for the survival, growth, and reproduction of an organism. Nutrient needs differ based on species. Humans fulfill their nutrient requirements from food and water. There are two classifications of nutrients: Macronutrients and Micronutrients.
Macronutrients
Macronutrients are the nutrients we need in larger quantities. They serve as a source of energy. There are three macronutrients:
- Protein
- Carbohydrate
- fat
Micronutrients
Micronutrients, on the other hand, are consumed in fewer quantities. According to WHO - They perform a range of functions, including enabling the body to produce enzymes, hormones, and other substances needed for growth and development. Micronutrients include
- Minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium, etc.
- Vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, etc.
