What are calories?

A calorie is a unit to measure the amount of energy an individual gets from a food item. The source of calories in food are macronutrients, which are proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. If the calories consumed are more than the calories required, then the excess calories are stored as fats. The calorie requirement for an average male is 2500, and for an average female is 2000. The nutritional energy is necessary for the proper functioning of an individual to be able to perform day-to-day activities. Calories taken must be less to lose, more to gain, and equal to maintain the current weight than the calories used.

Burning calories

Activities burn calories. The amount of calories burned depends on various factors such as type of activity, intensity, weight, gender, duration, etc. Even sedentary actions like sleeping, sitting, etc. burn calories. Tracking the number of calories burned can help to achieve the body weight goal.

Calculation of calories burned

Calculation of calories burned involves MET. MET stands for Metabolic Equivalent. Accoding to Wikipedia

The metabolic equivalent of task (MET) is the objective measure of the ratio of the rate at which a person expends energy, relative to the mass of that person while performing some specific physical activity compared to a reference, set by convention at 3.5 mL of oxygen per kilogram per minute, which is roughly equivalent to the energy expended when sitting quietly
So sitting calmly indicates 1 MET, which is 1kcal/kg/hour. A person weighing 65 kg will burn 65 calories just by sitting for 1 hour. Similarly, every activity has MET associated with it. Multiplying the MET with the weight and activity duration will give the calories burned while performing the activity.
